The leading oncologist remarks on evolving cancer patterns, increasing risk factors, and the necessity of early detection and precautionary healthcare.
New Delhi, India
There is an alarming increase in the rate of cancer cases in India. While advances in screening and diagnostic techniques can be attributed to the increased diagnoses, experts claim that changes in lifestyles, environmental changes, smoking, obesity, infections, and aging demographics are responsible for the increasing burden of cancer cases. As Delhi-NCR becomes more urbanised, the increasing air pollution levels and associated health issues due to lifestyle factors have become a cause for concern.
“As we seek to understand the reasons behind the increasing burden of cancers, it will help us decrease the load of the disease,” says Dr. Manoj Sharma, a renowned Medical Oncologist. “The key here is that there are several cancers which can be cured and even prevented through early diagnosis, regular screening, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking evidence-based medical advice.”
“Aside from genetic factors, the growing burden of cancer cases among our patients can be attributed to the increasing prevalence of unhealthy habits and environmental changes, which lead to delayed diagnosis and lack of awareness about the disease,” continued Dr. Manoj Sharma.
The healthcare specialists also indicate that cancers like breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, and oral cancer still make up a considerable number of cases in India. For people living in urban areas like Delhi-NCR, air pollution, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy dietary habits, rising stress levels, smoking, and alcoholism might add to the incidence of cancers.
According to Dr. Sharma, one of the major myths about cancer is that it has definite symptoms at the early stages. On the contrary, cancers grow quietly and remain unnoticed until the disease reaches an advanced stage.
“Early-stage cancers often don’t have symptoms. That’s why it is very crucial to go for regular health check-ups and cancer screening programs. It helps in detection and treatment of the disease on time,” he said.
Yet another emerging issue is the reluctance of people when they start noticing any signs and symptoms of the disease. The fear of getting diagnosed with cancer, the misinformation found on the Internet and the idea that cancer is a totally hopeless disease usually postpone seeking medical help.
Dr. Sharma pointed out that there have been a lot of breakthroughs in the field of oncology in the recent decade. Precision medicine, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, cutting-edge chemotherapy and highly precise radiation therapy are the key elements of successful cancer treatment now.
“Cancer treatment has become more personalised today than it used to be just a few years ago. Each patient is treated individually, taking into account the type of cancer, stage, molecular peculiarities, general condition and individual requirements. That’s why timely medical consultation makes a big difference,” noted Dr. Sharma.
In addition to the above, he also emphasised that prevention still continues to remain one of the most powerful tools against cancer. Steer clear from tobacco use in any form, restrict alcohol intake, keep your body weight healthy, eat a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, take care of excessive exposure to sun, get recommended vaccinations like HPV and Hepatitis B and participate in age-based cancer screening programs to significantly lower the chances of getting several types of cancers.
Residents of Delhi-NCR have been advised by Dr. Sharma to take note of any ongoing symptoms like unexplained weight loss, abnormal bleeding, chronic cough, difficulty swallowing, non healing mouth ulcers, changes in bowel habits, lumps, and fatigue. Although these may not always suggest cancer, yet these should never be overlooked.
“Be aware about the disease, make informed choices and take medical assistance on time—Cancer should not be feared; it should be understood,” Dr. Sharma concluded.
With growing advancements in India’s healthcare system and raising awareness about cancer, experts feel that public awareness, preventive healthcare, and better availability of specialised oncology treatments will play a crucial role in combating the menace of cancer.
